THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS

Nearly at the end of March already, who would believe it. I still maintain that this year will be my year for things to work and the last two month has just been a practice run. Guess we will have to wait and see.
As you are aware if you have been following my blog ( and if you haven't why not? get reading now!), This year has not had the best of starts. However three month in and things may be slightly starting to improve.

Caught up with University work and came out with a first for my Academic Mentor presentation which was great and after my personal development meeting, found out that I might not be as screwed as I thought I was with moving on to the final year. Although if all these health issues and my dads issues had not had to be dealt with what kind of grades would I be clearing? So it is with extreme caution that I apply for my final year of finance for my degree. But what comes next? For most students this would entail a masters or PHD or perhaps getting a job, but what about some one with chronic health issues such as myself? What do I do?Well I guess that is the question isn't it. Like so many others out there in the same situation (OK I admit there are people out there who do take the piss), I really want to work, even if its part time. Here is the problem, even part time I know there will be more times spent off then in and looking at my health issues most employers will take one look at me and will pass me over nor have the time, money or patience to put up with it.
So that leaves working for myself, but what as, how? The Psych Twins was supposed to be the start of that the whole, if Mohammad can't get to the mountain then the mountain will come to Mohammed thing, but with out grants/funding and being able to get contracts its all pie in the sky, a great service I keep getting told, that is greatly needed, but no money to do what we want with it, pay ourselves a wage or hire others.

So where dose that leave me? Well back at the beginning, on ESA, unemployable despite all my skills and training, just take a look at my CV (go on take a look you will find it on my LinkedIn Profile), despite the outward appearance of a withered, useless body ( I sometimes see myself as a female "Jabba The Hut" ) there is a mine of pure knowledge, skill and enthusiasm just waiting to be tapped into. This then leads to the "what's it all for then?" phase. The point at which you relaise that you are of no use, not even to yourself. You need help at home, help to go into education and help to hold down a job (if you could actually get some one to give you a chance) and the government is slowly tearing that all away from you any way.
This then moves into the "isolation" phase. As some one who has numerous illnesses/ health issues, going out socially is not a thing. Even if I had any one who would offer me to go out socially there is the accessibility of the venue and how good or bad am feeling on the day. ( All the offers of being invited places, even by family and friends dropped off after it became apparent that to invites some one out who has to use a wheelchair 90% of the time is just to darn pesky to organize. Especially if it means that one of you have to be responsible for helping said person and good god you might have to change the venue/pub route/restaurant to make sure its accessible etc etc ...you get the picture). So if you take going to university away, I leave the house once a week with my husband...maybe to look around the shops and any drs and hospital appointments. What does that mean realistically? If am lucky I will get out once a week maybe once every two/three weeks. WOW exciting life !

This then leads into the final stage..depression. yep. What more can I say about his phase, well nothing really, its all been said before. You can't see anyway out. Nothing is going to get any better, because there is nothing you can do to make it any better. No diet, exercise regime or will power is going to change those illnesses so you can go out to work, therefore get out more socially, have money to enjoy life, get  mortgage, move up in the world etc etc. No way of being a good little citizen just like the government want you to be. So you are labeled a scrounger, a waste of space, useless and society look down on you, and the government? well they just keep taking benefits away from you making it harder and harder to function on a day to day base, telling you to "get a job" "loose weight" "exercise" "this is how to improve your life and your credit"..we know! but we can't can we no one will let us.

Money wise, am lucky my husband runs his own business which ticks along for us, so things don't effect me as much as some people I know  - disabled and non disabled. I would love to go back to work, hold down a job doing something I would enjoy, bringing home a wage and getting off benefits. I dream of getting  a mortgage and owning my own house, done out to my specification no expense spared, holiday every year never mind twice a year instead of saving for 2 year to go away for  2 weeks (meaning no treats for the kids, no weekend breaks as a couple, no date nights, no family days out, no new clothes , going no where during the summer holidays etc etc).... and yes for those out there who follow my profile on Facebook I save to go to Florida and am well aware there are people who cant afford a weekend away, I did say am lucky.......to have more of a social life with my family and  friends rather then wondering if am getting out the house for an hour or two in the next 14 days.

Who knows maybe things will turn around. Maybe funding will come in and I can finally get The Psych Twins off the ground the way I want too and make a wage that way. Maybe my health will improve and I will get a job or there is some employer out there who will let me freelance as a writer or something and come in when I can for a wage.
Maybe I will become a tv personality and be on political shows and news program or have my own show. Maybe I will become a famous author. Maybe I will get the acting offer I cant refuse because of my unique physique as an amputee. and matronly and northern..yea OK the least of the lot to come true. All I do know is that I will keep on trying, wishing and dreaming. Oh and am getting an electric wheelchair ! so bright side I get to any future Film and Comic Conventions I can play a Darlek....

IS THIS THE LONGEST AND WORST JANUARY EVER?

Being an amputee one of the biggest issues I have apart from not having access to places is the weather. I wasn't steady on my feet before but now that I have what effectively feel like stilts, its a whole lot worse.

The main issues are rain ( living in the UK is 80% of the time), ice/frost and snow. Apart from the issues of the cold causing problems with the joints due to other health issues I have, this weather turns me in to a virtual recluse or risking a serious fall. Because I do not have a flexible foot or ankle and the prosthetic comes up to my knee cap, it makes balance and bending in them very difficult.
The weather since Christmas has been all over the place. High winds that caused issues with balance and asthma for me, torrential rain which meant a huge chance of slipping every time I went in doors, snow which means no outside at all, and now the media is telling us that it is all to start again with server snow due to it the UK.

As if already having a list as long as your arm with health issues isn't enough it looks like more will be added to it this year as mentioned in the last blog. I am struggling with university already and as well as missing  a second deadline now,  we have only been back a week and have already missed two days being in for lectures, with more to come due to all the appointment's I have coming my way. Dad is having money going out of his account with nothing to account for it as due to the dementia he is forgetting to pay his bills. this is going to mean more appointment's with social services ( for what good it will do).

So as well as struggling with my own demons (my depression, which is not uncommon for people with serious health issues or amputations to battle with), my health issues and university but I have my dads ill health to deal with and lack of control of pain. I can't speak for other people who are disabled but the hardest thing I  am finding at the moment is trying to do what every one else takes for granted, sometimes just keeping my head above water is a struggle. Being disabled to me means having to work harder to be "normal" like every one else. Things I used to take for granted and most of you still more then likely do, can be the biggest struggle for me.

Just getting up in the morning is a battle. Moving to sit up and get out of bed can be so painful it makes you cry. Getting ready can be a struggle so you need someone to help getting things on or off. Don't even talk to me about the shower ! The act of showering and the pressure of the water on my skin can sometimes be so painful that just having the show can set off a major fibro flare. Not to mention dropping stuff on the floor or things out of reach you just cant reach as you have no balance to do so ( weebles wobble but they dont fall down....unless you have no legs on and reach for something and go  face first into the floor ).  Then we should talk about the holding cups, forks and dropping everything, pins and needles in the hands, not being able to pick things up......the list goes on and I still push myself to attend appointments, university, sort out my dad and working on The Psych Twins. Can't wait for the new additions from the things am waiting to hear about.( thats sarcasm by the way, just in case you missed it).

These are what I suffer from at the moment :
amputee with phantom limb pains and nerve damage
Fibromyalgia
sleep aneapa
chronic fatigue syndrome
Arthritis - rheumatoid and osteo
rynalds
circulation problems
IBS
depression
and waiting on news about heart and cancer......I think thats everything, comes to something when you cant remember everything you have been labeled with.

With everything going on with me and my family, the amount of famous people who are loved by society dying, the news is full of death, disasters and the government screwing us over even more, but trying to stay positive so looking forward to what is to come this year.

The Psych Twins will be attending Walker Stalker in February to do reviews for access, Newcastle comic con reviewing March, Hero conventions in Edinburgh in April reviewing access, Asylum 16 and City of Heros 2 promoting ourselves in May, Metro unleashed promoting ourselves in June and Screen Con in Tynemouth promoting ourselves in July and as long as there are no more financial disasters the main thing am looking forward to is my  three week holiday to Florida in the USA.

so even though reading through the list of aliments I have makes me wonder how I function or even get up at all, I still have things to look forward to. Now if I could just work out how to stay upright in the snow.....

HAPPY NEW YEAR !... CAN I START AGAIN?

January is the same every year. No money , nothing to look forward to, dark nights, grey days etc etc. But people every where tend to make the same resolutions, new year new me, starting the gym, stopping smoking, going on a diet and my personal favorite, this year will be better.... well am still waiting. I have decided to put January as a trail and the New Year for me doesn't start until February,
( knowing my luck though this will persist until June or something and I sill be putting the previous 5 month as "just a trail").

As soon as the clock chimed midnight on the 31st it all went to pot.
Dad kicked off.
Stress levels through the roof
Arguments
Health issues escalated
And I ended up missing a deadline for the first time ever !

Dad was refusing his carers which resulted in more arguments between him and my sister, leading to my sister being more stressed out. On top of this he was forgetting to pay his bills becoming more and more in arrears with his electric and gas. He was refusing any form of personal care or hot food and decided to rip the telecare monitor out.

Thankfully I have managed to get his social worker to do a review of the services and he has agreed to paying his bills by direct debit which am arranging for him, the telecare has been reconnected ( although he is still refusing to wear the call button, but small steps.) and he has agreed to keep the carers for the morning and night who will help him with the porridge for breakfast and a sandwich for his supper. Still not winning on the personal care front but I am grateful for the small things at the moment. The one thing through out this that has really annoyed the hell out of me is the way that so called "care professionals" talk to the elderly, vulnerable and disabled. I noticed when she was talking it wasn't too my dad but at my dad, which I thought was horrendous and extremely disrespectful. He may have dementia but he is still a person. Whilst she was talking about him to his partner or to me it was if he wasn't in the room. His whole body language was sad, defeatist as if to say " I may as well not be here, no one listens to me". That got me thinking about how people talk to me. When am in the wheelchair, which fair enough is most of the time now, I get talked at or instead of asking me a question they ask who ever is pushing me, as if am invisible There is also a difference from when am in the wheelchair and out of it. I don't get talked at but I do get talked down to, as if because my legs are missing somehow this included my intelligence and being to understand anything. Talking to my sister the other night on the phone and she mentioned something similar. If her partner mentions that she has had a brain tumor or surgery people treat/talk to her differently .
Why?
Is this just lack of training on behalf of the professionals, or do they just become so worn down by seeing the same thing day in and day out that it is robotic and automatic? Is it just human nature to look down on the infirm and the disabled, see them some how as inferior, less then human. Is it a simple case that evolution dictates that we over look these people or try less as there is no gain, the genetics are faulty therefore we are over looked? ( see, told you I was studying psychology).

The cardiologist went well I thought. Heart trace was normal and no sign of a murmur and he is pretty certain that it is nothing linked to my talipes, ( people born with talipes can sometimes also have muscle issues in their legs, hip issues and/ or heart defects/issues). However it could be something called egtopic heartbeats or A.F ( arterial fibrillation?). So to rule anything out I have to have three tests carried out. One is a heart monitor for 72 hours, a echo gram of the heart and a ultrasound. So its going to be a few month of waiting before we get any final results. This of course means more stress and worry.( I do sometimes wonder if this might be payback for me labeling the heart the opposite way round during my physiology exam two year ago?).

Got the pain clinic appointment coming up in a few month, but to be honest do not see the point in going. Pain clinics tend to look at alternative ways of dealing with the pain to be used in conjunction or instead of pain killers. Tried them all before, didn't work then will not work now. So its back to the docs to look at upping the meds. Can't wait to see what that leads to !

Then to top things off, just as I thought nothing else could be thrown at me this year never mind this month I received a very unexpected letter. I have to go to the Northern Centre for Cancer to have genetic screening done. well, blow me down, ( trust me I said worse then that but am trying to keep this a 12 PA). So this will mean months of tests and waiting to see what the out come is. All of this just in time to return to university after the Christmas holidays for exams and deadlines. Not sure how this is going to impact on things or if I will even complete the degree .

Watch this space!

( I swear I should write a bloody book ! only problem is it would be put in the fiction section as no one would believe it. Soap operas have more realistic story lines then my life).

THAT IN-BETWEEN STUFF

Christmas means different things to different people. To most it's supposed to be a time with family, to have fun, over eat and be jolly. What about the people it effects differently? The lonely, the people dealing with mental health issues and depression and the homeless.

Loneliness and depression effect different people in different ways. Having recently been diagnosed with depression this month and being put on anti depressants it is not something I would wish on anyone. Things just got on top of me and found it really difficult to cope. Between my health getting worse, issues with my heart, cancer scare and dealing with my dads dementia diagnosis's it all become too much and I ended taking time off university. It can be a very debilitating thing to experience. Feeling disjointed, empty, everything looks grey and muted.

The anti depressants that I have been put on for the last month are duloxetine. The main problem I am having with them is the drowsiness during the day and the limb pain. A night time is horrific. The phantom limb pain feels like a cross between pins and needles /numbness and electrical firing with small shards of glass digging into my legs. This feeling goes up from the end of my stump all the way to just below my knee.
Due to this, since starting the anti depressants I have yet to have a good full nights sleep which is draining to say the least.

I also hate to admit that I have to acknowledge how much the pain killers actually do help after running out of them this festive period. I suppose like most people I thought that I would be better off with out the pain killers, that they would be easy to give up if I wanted to because, hey what good did they do anyway? They didn't take the pain away, in fact taking smarties would have more use..so I thought. Like I said it wasn't until I went with out them all together for the last 4 days that I actually found out just how much of the pain they did dull. They might not take all of it away but they sure as hell tone it down. I felt like a junkie gagging for a fix when David came back with the prescription from the chemist.
On top of the phantom limb pain there was the bone pain, knees, elbows, back, hips and wrists with the arthritis not to mention the swelling and pain in all the joints such as fingers, neck etc, nerves, skin itching and sensitivity of the skin which is due to the Fibromyalgia...Yea fun festive season. However this didn't stop me from enjoying this Christmas, although it feels like it went really quickly. I was even brave and ventured into the town (which is unknown to me during the month of December full stop). This did not help the stress as on top of it being busy, the festive spirit in people seemed to be non existant. If you only got as tall as their waists as you where more seen as being in the way and I swear if I had to hear one more person tut behind me or loudly complain that I was in the way and they couldn't get where they wanted to be instantly, I would have went on a rolling rampage ! You would think if they had mouths big enough to complain very loudly to their shopping companions, they could open them to say "excuse me".
However in the New Year am at the chronic pain clinic and the cardiologist so lets see how that goes.

Despite all of this I have tried to stay positive and it helped that we where awarded a grant from Starbucks redcupcheer campaign. I know it sounds sad but I was so excited to find out The Psych Twins had won the money, I was bubbling with excitement.  We managed to speak to Sun FM who agreed to deliver some bags of shopping to a food bank for us on Christmas Eve. So the poor long suffering husband had to do the shop at Asda  and get the bags down to the radio station. We have also been able to help Age UK in Sunderland by putting hampers together for the New Year for them and Centre Point in Sunderland who support 16-21 year olds who are homeless, who we are going to buy things for again in the New Year.

So as life ebbs and flows around us so my life has it's usual ups and downs, and this festive period as been a variety bag of plus and minuses. The downside being the pain and depression but the up side being the good deeds we are going to be able to do for people and the help we can give through The Psych Twins. Michael and Georgia have been up for the week which was another huge plus and there are lots of things on the horizon for both The Amputee Diaries and The Psych Twins in 2016 but also more medical issues.

Stay strong and be true to yourselves and I wish all my readers a happy and safe New Year and look forward to blogging for you all in 2016 what ever it may bring my way I will make sure you are the first to know.

COMICS, HERO'S AND VILLAIN'S AND NO AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT

Its been a very busy weekend for The Amputee diaries, I along with DC Photography (my husband) and my daughter, we hit Film and Comic Con Newcastle this weekend.

Again we where lucky enough to be able to attend one of Showmasters celebration of all things film and geek. Lots of fun was had and we both entered the spirit of the occasion by Cos-playing for the two days. For anyone that is not aware what happens or what a Film and Comic Convention is all about or what Cos-playing is read on.

Cos-Playing put simply is when you dress up as your favorite character from a film, TV show, comic or game and these conventions are all about celebrating all things geeky and that is wonderful about these things we are passionate about. Now don't get me wrong some people take this very seriously indeed. Hours, days sometimes even months go in to making very detailed props and costumes that are screen accurate (not to mention money). Others do their interpretation of the character they have chosen to be, there is no right or wrong in this world where everyone is accepted and everyone is equal. Complete strangers are willing to pose for photos with you or on their own, where you get asked to pose for other people, where people are interested in how long it took you to make your head piece or instantly recognize who you are dressed as, family's can attend to have fun, little ones can dress up and pose with their favorite characters from film and comics, stuff that ordinary shops don't sell can be bought and for a fee you can get a photograph or autograph from a famous celebrity out of your favorite film or TV show, or your favorite author or artist from the comic world.

These events are great for meeting and making new friends, having a day out with the little ones or just collecting memorabilia and autographs. What ever your thing you will find it here. There is no judgement, there is gender bend costumes, home made costumes and professional Cos Players rubbing shoulders with non cos Players and stars of the big and little screen.  However it was sad to see that not many disabled people or wheelchair users at these events. There is help there, just well hidden which is where I come in. This weekend I only saw one other person in a wheelchair Cos Playing.

There is a darker side to the Conventions and believe it or not, regardless of how accepting they are bullying can sometimes still be an issue. Speaking to a lot of Cos Players over the weekend, most get involved for the same reasons I
do, its freeing. A couple of hours not worrying about your disability, life, anxiety, depression, stress,
being accepted for who you are with like minded people.A lot talked about how they where bullied at school for various reasons and attending the conventions, Cos Playing has helped with that. Its helped them to see that there is nothing wrong with them it was the people who bullied them that had the problem. This is why it is so sad to see it happening between Cos Players, especially in an environment where you should feel safe.  Its sad to say that some of the  Cos Players (mainly at the bigger cons), do suffer from bullying, why? because their costumes aren't screen accurate, because they are showing  too much flesh or because some one thinks they are the wrong shape or size to play a certain character, this can put some people off from Cos Playing for the first time as they may already be anxious or stop some one from doing it again, words hurt, but this will be something I will cover in a different blog when doing another review for a  convention.

So if this event is so great to be why haven't I heard of it? I hear you scream (or you should be screaming). These kinds of things do not seem to be advertised main stream so unless you know some one who attends them or you are into the Marvel world, DC fanatic or Star wars Fan you may have missed the opportunity to attend one till now. My first convention was back in March 2015 at Newcastle at a Showmasters event. I was hooked. I had heard of the conventions the most famous one being the San Diego one in the US (if anyone would like to donate a ticket or press pass for that one it would be appreciated) but had never thought to go to one, why? because I was disabled and in a wheelchair.

I am always aware that not all places are accessible and like most people who have a disability I panic and therefore try to plan in advance for every eventuality even down to the smallest detail. Will there be an accessible entrance? where is it? will there be lifts? can I get round the stalls?  where are the toilets? will they be big enough to get in with my wheelchair? what happens if I want a photo with the celeb? the list is endless. Now I think I know what you might be thinking here - But aren't all venues accessible now due to the disability act? No funny enough they are not. This could be due to the age of the building, it being listed or just bad design etc. I once went to book a hotel in London who claimed to be accessible but had steps up to the front entrance, their answer was some one could come out and carry me up the steps ????? You also have to think about the people who organize these events. Disabled accessible might mean the doors are wide and there is a wide disabled toilet and  lift. They don't think about other things like, getting up to the front entrance, is the toilet wide enough to get a wheelchair in and another person if a carer is needed? how easy is it to get to the lift? are the aisles wide enough, getting around equipment and most importantly (to me anyway), do the staff know how to deal with this? Now a lot of disabled people don't mind asking for help or even accepting help but there are some who don't want to ask some one else for help or accept it  when help is offered or who want to be as independent as possible when out and about and this is what event organizers need to be aware of as well as their staff and volunteers.

So off I went to my third comic con that Showmasters have organised. The one in March I found very confusing, was un aware of what help was available and don't even mention trying to get around the stalls to look ! The second one was up in Glasgow which I thought the venue was excellent, downside however was the lack of information from staff and the lack of staff to be honest.
The venue in Newcastle is the Metro Arena  very good and very accessible, The parking is £5 per day for the full day unless you have blue badges then it is free. However the disabled parking spaces are limited. Access into the venue is good and there are plenty of staff on hand to open doors and help you in. Every thing for the convention is on the level and showmasters got everything right this time. There was enough space to get around the food stands, accessing the prop shoots was easy enough, with enough room to maneuver around the area. Although I didn't have any photos with stars taken this time and it will always be like a conveyor belt, access and staff helpfulness though was excellent. Whilst David was having a photo shoot with Colin Baker they took me down  to wait at the other side for him collecting his picture with out any fuss or awkwardness.
This year they had added changing rooms for male and female cos players which where situated upstairs but where accessible to everyone via a lift if needed. The registration desk was accessible and the staff helpful and informative. I learnt that they have an email address to contact should you need extra help ( I will put it at the end of the blog), carers can go free with no restrictions on buying photo ops or autographs or taking part in any talks, Some evidence my be required such as DLA letter, Carers letter or a photo copy of you blue badge. You will also be given a slip of paper which you  can then show to the pit bosses, who wear red. This will get you help and access to  all photo shoots as quickly as possible, enter any autograph queue without needing a virtual ticket. This was a brilliant idea, shame no one informed us of this at Glasgow. Also found out that should you have a child or adult with ASD or ADHD that needs a quiet place to calm down then they will be able to sort that out as well.
There are disabled toilets on either side on the ground floor that are accessible with the use of a radar key. There are staff on hand that have the key. On one side the person was next to the disabled toilet but on the other side there was no one around and my daughter had to walk to the bottom of the corridor to the nearest person in a yellow coat to ask who had the key. Luckily it was her but had it been some one else that could have been a huge problem, especially for some one on their own or who could not be left unattended or who had any kinds of control issues. My advice bring your own key as I believe radar keys are all the same but check. The other downside was where to get the key from was not made obvious.
Nothing was said at the front desk and there where no notices on the door of the toilet
or wall. The person I spoke to showsec?? Refused to answer any questions on disability training etc as they had been told not to give any interviews, very strange.

The lay out of the room was much better this time, The big blue boards that they had at the end of each aisle had gone and for some reason the aisles looked more spaced out. That could have been down to this event being quieter then the one at Glasgow and in March at Newcastle, but the difference was amazing ! easy to get around, get to the traders and plenty of staff on hand to help out. Bravo Showmasters you might have cracked this  venue. However I would be very interested to see how they work at other venues like  London, Brighton or Manchester. I mean do they follow the same training and format for all staff? if so at the registration in Glasgow why wasn't I told about the extra help? How come in March nothing was signposted for disabled use? These are things that still need to be worked on in my opinion.

I also would love to go to other organizers events to compare who they deal with disability issues etc so watch this space as we will try to get answers there as well. Having looked at MCM, Hero Conventions and Rogue Events there is not a lot of information, Showmasters have the email address to contact if there is an accessibility or health concern. Rogue have a contact email to register a carer to go for free or they charge a large fee to have a pa available to you should you be on your own, However unlike show masters the carer is not allowed to purchase photo ops or autographs unless they have bought a full price ticket, bit harsh if you ask me. MCM and Hero convention there is no mention of disabled access, families or carers and under contact there is a general inquiry email address. Of course there is also comparing it to how the USA deal with their comic cons and disability issues, carers or families with special needs, so again something I would love to  take a look at.

To be honest I think these conventions and businesses should take things like this more seriously. At the end of the day who knows how much business you could be missing out on? Employers should be thinking about this as well because as we are well aware the government are determined to cut benefits and are deeming all and sundry fit for work, if so is your company disabled friendly? are your staff trained on how to talk to some one about mental health or how to approach offering help to some one in a wheelchair? I don't think they are. Every where I go it is disturbing to see just how many businesseswrite off the disabled customer /user. Think about it .

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS OR SO THEY SAY

Things have been a little hectic since going back to university.

Every thing going well, lots of reading of psychology books as you would expect, assignments already starting to come out of the woodwork and this year we have a new support worker, Gail. There was no issues getting the taxis sorted back out and things seem to be running smoothly at uni for a change although debating the psychology of religion is interesting. However I cant say that in other areas of my life.

My farther, since being diagnosed with mixed dementia just before I returned to uni, has received no help what so ever. In fact the social worker that was assigned to him decided that because she saw dishes in the sink and assumed (wrongly) that meant he had eaten that day (in fact those dishes had been there for a number of days, that she saw no rubbish (because my sister had cleaned the house just days before, which we told her) and she could not smell any bodily smells ( will leave that one to your imagination), then he was capable of making his own decisions. This even though the CPN who was there knew the consultant from the Dementia clinic had declared that just looking at him any one could tell he was "not all there ". Lovely man (insert sarcasm here). Don't even get me started on the way he treat and talked to my dad.

So we are slowly watching his money going missing, his house going to wrack and ruin and him not changing his clothes or eating because we can not get help for him. This all due to this social workers recommendations on him being capable.

So that on top of uni work. Then you need to add on my health getting worse.

With the onset of the colder weather now in the UK ,my joints and mobility are getting worse and so are my stumps. Already on paracetamol, Nepfom and Tramadol. So after ringing the doctors I was put on Oramorph 5 - 10ml every four hours. Not a good thing for uni. Have been taking 2.5 ml in the hope that I could get away with that. Nope. Needed to up it to 5 ml a couple of days ago. This made university very interesting yesterday. We where doing a spot on visual attention, so here's me high on medication trying to count how many Blues are in the song Blue by Eiffel 64 at the same time trying to find Wally.......I think I was an outlier....it was a very trippy effect to say the least but the lecture found it amusing to say the least. Today I have woke up with a swollen  right stump and purple spots all over the bottom of my stump. Putting the liner on is like a million shards of glass in my skin and that's before putting weight through the leg. My initial thought is a reaction to the Morphine due to upping the dose. So off I come. The pain is unbearable, but am grinning through it like I always do, hoping that tomorrow its manageable and I can get into uni. I have an assessment on the 4th of November for an electric wheelchair, which if I get it will make my life so much easier giving me so much more independence.

So now we have uni work, dad with dementia and pain increase. Then you need to add the event in the mix.

Last Saturday we held a promotion at The Bridges in Sunderland . This was to promote the Halloween Monster Masquerade Ball on the 31st at the Stadium of Light, but also to promote what The Psych Twins do.
The response was fantastic and in just little over a week we have had 700 new visitors to the site. We are thrilled. The final preparations are in place now, balloons for the tables booked, decorations for the room ordered and costumes bought. I am going as Cruela De Vile. I have even bought a Dalmatian cuddly toy to hold and stroke so am going to look like Blowfelt from James Bond....just with no legs, well plastic legs..you know what I mean.

THE DARK SIDE OF LIFE

There is a side to life that most people go through but rarely want to discus and that's depression and anxiety. Its like the elephant in the room. Being disabled from birth I have found that I bounced back easier then I do these days from it.

I am not saying that disabled people get this more or worse then anyone else but I often find myself wondering how much it dominates other amputees lives. Losing a limb is like nothing else health wise I have been through and grieving is definitely part of that process. Its took me 4 year to be objective and admit that having the second amputation really screwed me up mentally.

At first I thought it would be no different to going through my first amputation when my feet where removed. Couldn't understand why people made a big deal about grieving for the limb and how they found it hard to get past it, not until I had the below knee, then it all made sense. I was so not prepared for what was about to happen to me or how I would feel afterwards.

Therapy and advice was non existing for the second amputation. For the feet I was introduced to a guy who had lost his leg below the knee from an accident at work, nothing like me having my feet removed through necessity. This time though there was nothing. I was not given support before I went in, never mind after it, no one to talk to, I wasn't even put in touch with any one who had been through this for the first time never mind a second time. But hey I would be fine ..right? wrong!
Although the operation went well I found it hard to bring myself to look at the bandages. This just got worse when it was time to remove them. I felt physically sick every time I looked at them. I wouldn't look in a full length mirror nor did I want my photo taken. I wouldn't go out, my friends stopped coming around as often (not sure if it was because of how I was acting or because they did not know how to handle the fact I had no lower legs), I stopped getting invited to go places, nights out and family events as I guess it became more "complicated" to accommodate me or because people did not want a constant reminder of their own mortality. Maybe it was because it would be more trouble then it was worth or they assumed because my legs where gone so had my likes, interests and personality.

I became agoraphobic and having panic attacks at the thought of going out never mind to a new place, not sleeping, moving between binge eating and not eating at all, sleeping all the time and up all night not to mention the crying and mood swings. My weight ballooned and family where non existent for support or help.My mother was dead and my husbands mother helped as much as she could up until her death but when she died we where left afloat on our own and I became more dependent on my two oldest kids and my husband.

I was discharged from hospital with no help put in place. We had to organise the wheelchair our selves, as well as OT to look at adaptions. I had to apply twice and wait over a year to have the bathroom adapted so I could use a toilet instead of a commode and a shower instead of having a bed bath.
Trying times that luckily made me and my husbands marriage stronger if anything and my relationship with my children better. I ended up on anti depressants and having CBT therapy, which I had to do the research for and implement myself.  That is when my life turned around. I found the tools to manage my anxiety, signed up to University and have never looked back !

But not everyone is as strong as me, not everyone has a loving husband and kids who understand and this is when depression can swallow you up like a black whole, never ending and not forgiving.

That's when I thought "is this the same for everyone who goes through an amputation?", "what about people with other disabilities? do they have anything in place".I went back to work 3 month after my amputation, desperate to get back to a "normal" life as quick as possible, this was when things really went down hill ! The medication I was on started having effects on my judgement and I left the job I had as I felt uncomfortable, out of place and discriminated against. Then came the trying to get another job. Not great for a confidence boost, you would be amazed at how many employers will not higher you on the grounds of not having the facility's to cater for some one like me eg an amputee using a wheelchair.

I did find another job but then my other health issues started to raise their ugly heads. My body was in shock and my nervous system was suffering from trauma and working was no longer an option,  I felt at one point that society had basically washed it's hands of me and I no longer had a purpose in life. Yes I had no legs and was in a wheelchair, alright this ended up causing other health issues for me, but surely this can't be it?? There must be something I can do? I can't just spend all day every day on meds that spaced me out watching the days merge into one and time slipping away.

But how many others just accept this? Believe the crap that society feeds them? thinking that because of this their life is over?  This is wrong !! There should be something in place to support and advice people before AND after the operation. People with disabilities should have access to free counselling to help them if and when needed , some one to point them in the right directions for services, help and advice. This is one of the reasons I have started the Psych Twins.

If you are suffering from depression and think whats the point? you are not alone.  You are not the first and wont be the last to go through this, to feel the way you do. You're not "abnormal" for feeling the way you do and do not let anyone make you think you are. Your life is not over!!

Yes am better these days then I was but I still suffer bad days as well as good. There are days when I wonder why I bother and what is the point of getting out of bed. Days when I think to myself " why struggle on painkillers that take the edge off when you can take stronger ones and just let the pain and days/time slip away". I still have times when I cry for no reason or something some one says or does that normally would not bother me makes me despair or break down. Anxiety, stress and panic attacks are still my constant companion but I now have the tools that help, sometimes they still over whelm me but its better then it was. And I still do not like having my photo taken in my wheelchair, but am working on that one lol.

The point of this story is you might ask. I guess the point is, you are not alone, this is normal, don't give up and keep fighting. You are worth it ! If you need to talk or have questions please feel free to contact me.

A DAY OF RECKONING IS COMING

Still have no trainer to get me into shape for the Great North Run in 2016 so it looks like am going to be kicking my own arse for it.
Went to get weighed so I could have an idea of my starting weight . SO not happy! 21st 11lb. What happened? So have bought Asdas version of Slim Fast . finding it difficult but persevering. My snacking has stopped so have the biscuits and coffees ,but yes you guessed it , not so much the crisps which are my nemesis. Not crisps really these Fish n Chip biscuit things, really bad addiction to them but managed to cut down to only having them twice this week instead of every day so YEAH go me!
Re started my physio in a morning as well as light weights for my arms ( apparently exercise is supposed to help Fibro....still waiting for that one to kick in), sit to stands from the wheelchair to strengthen my legs and back. Had my first go on the treadmill as well. Worried I was going to fall flat  on my face but it went OK so starting that from next week.

So what has this last week brought me? lots not all good either. Took part in a study for a student at Oxford University which was really interesting and glad I did that. I have had an article published as a personal story for this blog in Disability Today which is an online site and there is the possibility of talking to new students in the new term taking on the level 0 of Psychology. this is to share my experience of the course, explain what happens at University once you get there, such as volunteering, society's and what to expect as well as doing Q&A sessions with them.
Mikey came home from Stafford University last Tuesday which was great. The kids are really happy to have him home as are me and his dad. Bless at the moment he is relegated to the couch as we have no room for him but when the summer holidays start anna is giving up her room for a while for him. Tylers SATS went well and he quite enjoyed them..strange boy and Anna has her prom this weekend so handbag and shoe buying was on the cards this week as well as booking the salon for her hair and nails.

Now the not so good news. Got a letter back from DWP and I have an assessment with ATOS on the 3rd of June. This should be interesting. They have asked for all my tablets and aids.... no room in the car for everything I need for help on a day to day basis and even if there was the assessment room would not be big enough. Worried about attending, people keep telling me that they should be no reason why I would lose it but hey this is the DWP who can say what they are going to do. I have heard stories of people who have lost the money and worse then me.Losing it would have a huge negative impact on my life and make me more of a recluse then I am already. At the moment other then Uni and drs/hospital appointments and possibly one day a week in the town I do not go out. I socialize....well ....I don't really. People tend not to ask me too and when David and I do get to go out to the pictures it is once in a blue moon to be honest.
Ended up at the Doctors as the Tramadol is no longer working and have been given more tablets to take along side the paracetamol and the Tramadol which are Nefopam 30mg. Have to start off on one tablet a day then slowly increase until am on 3 a day. So far experienced  a bad stomach, nausea and a slight euphoric feeling but no help with the pain. The doctor has told me that eventually, whether I want to or not , I will have to go onto the hard core tablets full time. That means not being able to function during the day. Not sure what impact this will have on my plans but hopefully I can stay off them long enough to carry out what I want to do.
Also having to have a blood test and an ultra sound on my underarm as they may be a lump. The worrying thing is that Cancer is big in our family my sister and niece have both been affected in various ways including breast and cervix cancer and my mother died of cancer of the stomach. Better to be safe then sorry I suppose but it is still worrying times. Also having to get in touch with the Genetics center at Newcastle to see if am predisposed to it. Still awaiting an ultra sound on my stumps about narrowing veins and hospital appointment to have my neck, shoulders and back checked out . Not good times.
could not talk to the doctor about every thing I need to as my anxiety and depression my be on the raise again but I had not made a double appointment and was told I would have to go back another time to discuss them. On top of all of this my dad has to have an MRI on Monday as he may have a form of dementia. The thing is he is now getting abusive to my older sister Maureen, but does not even know who I am...don't know which is worse to be honest. How would you feel if you mother was dead and your father did not know who you where and just thought you where some strange women?

To round the week off went into town on Wednesday and when in HMV was treat like a child by the sales assistant. I was so embarrassed that I honestly did not know what to say. I thought I had gotten over the whole self conscious thing and feeling insecure, lack of self confidence, but the way this woman treat me has really made me feel that way again, Its surprising how one little thing done or said that might not have been meant as anything in particular, or not even a conscious thing by the person, can have such a huge negative impact on some one.

However lets end this on a good point. Showmasters got back to me and they have refunded Davids tickets as they do carers passes and have sent me an email with all the information on  that will help me with getting around Comic Con in London ! So much help am over the moon and it has really stopped me stressing about going out of my comfort zone. Now am just looking forward to it. Still not sure to cos-play or what as so any thoughts on this would be great.

Don't forget if you want to talk to me, ask a question, need advice or some one to talk to there are several ways to get in touch. All you need to do is copy and past the link into your browser or click on it.

ASSESSMENTS, EXAMS AND STRESS !

May is the season of those all dreaded exams !......well it is for me.

Coming to the end of my second year of a four year extended degree course in Psychology. The time has gone so quickly. It seems like only two minutes ago I was all wide eyed and eager to be on campus . Now I feel like a veteran fighter of SPSS software, Research papers , Journals and library books. Don't even get me started about he referencing !

I am happy with the progress that I have made this year but the attendance is a bit of a let down. Understandable considering that I have been dealing with personal issues, stump splitting and other health issues that have plagued me more this year then last. But if I have managed to get the results I have off the attendance I have had for this year then next year they will be even better.

Preparations have gone well and I have actually managed to get some decent revision time in. I have been sent my exam timetable where I have been given extra time , PC use and a scribe if necessary. This has greatly put my mind at ease.

Another area of assessment was for an electric wheelchair. I was referred by the Disabled Service Center at the Freeman's. But this has took at least four month for an appointment to come through in order to be seen. I ended up having to miss University as it was an all day appointment. They could not give me an actual time that they would be coming out. Well after waiting all day they came out and the assessment was over and done with in five minutes. I have to wait 3 month to find out if I qualify then two month to get an appointment to try one out then another 2 month before i get one. But here is the downside. It can be lifted into a vehicle and it cant be folded down to go in a boot. So what ever car I use mine or a taxi has to have ramps that I have to maneuver the wheelchair up. After my track record of wheelchair ramps with Station taxis and various others, including my close call with ending up in hospital because one taxi company dropped me off the side at the top of  a pair of these ramps, well, lets just say am not convinced it will be beneficial or indeed useful for me.

Still no news on being referred for a scan on my legs and stumps for blocked vessels or issues. If you remember this was due to the splitting of the stumps and the lack of colour and how cold the legs where becoming. Put it this way they would be warmer sometimes being stuck in the freezer at -30.

But an assessment of another type has been received. The dreaded  PIP !!!!! da da daaaaaa!!!

So finally it is my chance to go through the process of the PIP reassessment for my DLA. This should be interesting . Now there has been a lot of horror story's going around about being assessed for this such as people losing there benefits, being asked if limbs will grow back. being told they are capable for work or not being told that they qualify for mobility for a car. So I have two large booklets to fill in , trying to explain to some one who might have no medical experience what so ever that no matter how many times the form asks, no I can not walk with out my prosthesis, yes that means I can't climb stairs, no my wheelchair does not turn me into a darlek meaning I can now do steps etc by flying. Oh and no, they are not going to grow back anytime soon.

But although this is a stressful month there is light at the end of the tunnel. One point of light is I have re booked Disney for three weeks this time next October. This is booked through Jetsave so lets see how they compare to Thompson. The assistance form leaves a lot to be desired so reserving judgement on the rest. This time trying a deluxe resort at the Wilderness lodge. So considering we had excellent service from a value hotel and a moderate hotel from Disney, I am expecting this to blow my mind.
A second light is that we are definatley going to London Film and Comic Con at the Olympia this July. I am nervous about this as I have no idea what the facilities for wheelchair users are. Looked at the layout of the exhibition center and seems easy enough but lets wait and see. Getting cars to take us down as am not brave enough yet to try British rail lol. Staying at the Olympia Hilton that has been booked online and have stated that am a wheelchair user so again lets see what happens. Showmasters as yet have not replied to any communications regarding disabled issues etc. tut tut.So this is me going out of my comfort zone. Watch this space for feed back on both of these things.

Also looking at trying to get people together to do gishwhes which is a world scavenger hunt and hoping to get tickets to Asylum 16 which is a Supernatural convention. Watch this space as well as me and Jo have opted to do The Great North Run in 2016 dressed as......wait for it.......AB FAB ! am Eddy of course :)  This is in order to raise funds for The Psych Twins so we can open a center to offer support, advice and counselling for disabled people and their families including families of children with ADHD and ASD. A news article to follow on this soon.

TIME GOES SO QUICK....

So Annabelle 16th birthday has came and gone already. Michael is coming up twenty one in less then a week and Eden ( my second eldest daughter ), turns nine the day after Mikey.

As well as getting crowned in Disney we took her for a meal in town. A restaurant called D'Aqua in Sunderland.

Now this restaurant does not have disabled access, in fact there is quiet a steep set of steps at the front of the premises. However upon ringing them they helped to solve the problem and told me that there would be no issues for me to use the kitchen access at the back of the building as it was ramped with one small step to negotiate,

The staff and owners bent over backwards for myself and to accommodate the wheelchair and where fantastic with the little ones as well. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made the children feel welcome. even thought it is what I would class as a up market/ chic restaurant. As for myself I felt very comfortable and not once did they make me feel as if I was an inconvenience ! Bravo ! unfortunately there are not many places around where they bother to take into account your whole experience including how you feel and make you feel welcome.

So if you are looking for somewhere a little different and that little bit special I would defiantly give this place a go.

If you do have mobility issues like myself then do ring them They are very accommodating (within reason of course), and are more then happy to help if they can, The prices where good and the food quality was out of this world. My kids can be fussy eaters especially Tyler as he has sensory ASD, but they left nothing and even asked for more.
The cake we had made for her by Bella Sweet delights, I will put the link for both the restaurant and Bella at the end of this blog should you be interested.

The limb center meeting about the bleeding stumps and coldness of the legs went better then expected. They are sending me for a scan of my legs as although they have a good pulse they could be a narrowing of the arteries or a blockage which is causing the issue.

This has had to be referred from the GPs  so as yet still waiting on an appointment.
The kitchen is now looking more like a kitchen. We finally got a sink back and cupboards to put things away. Still waiting on flooring but we do have the holes fixed with ply wood over the top, An extractor fan and tilling still need to be done so we can then decorate but still missing skirting boards.

This has now been on going for  6 or 7 weeks now so starting to get a little sick and tired of it all.

The last thing I want to mention is help for anyone who might be looking or thinking of going back to work.

Don't think that there is no help out there as if you need support, help with your travel needs or specialist equipment then it is available through Access to Work.

As well as this there is a little known about incentive for employers to take you on as well. There are funds available for the prospective employer to have adaptations done at no expense to them as well as money for taking you on. There is no cost to the employer for any help or equipment supplied. This can include things like chairs, desks or wrist rests and many more things.

Next time I will be reviewing the services used for Toyahs birthday, my charity head shave, Sun FM interview and help being put in place for the exams (hopefully ).

I would love feed back on this blog so please feel free to share and comment and if there is anything in particular you would like me to look into or have a question about then please let me know.

On a lighter note..when moving please remember to take the one break off you have put on as you will end up going round in circles..just like I did because I forgot !

ITS BEEN A WHILE...MISS ME?

First off my apologies for not submitting anything for a long time.

A lot has happened in 6 months. Started university in Sunderland and although some days are better then others am managing alright for the most part. The Reg Vardy building has a few issues in regards to accessing the rooms for seminars and the lift has been off a few times in the last couple of month , but over all not too bad, I have seen worse . The prospect building where the bulk of the lectures are held and the library is housed is great and very easy to access. I have a support worker to push me around with me not being able to self propel due to the fibromyalgia and to take notes if things get too bad, but the lecturers have been extremely helpful. Not doing too bad on the work side of things and coming up to exam season soon so preparing for that. Busy finishing up the last of the essays and reports. Can't believe the time has gone so quickly.

Went back to Florida again in October and what a brilliant time. Flew with Thompson and I have to say their attention to detail was outstanding.

The help we received with the wheelchair and getting the help I needed to get on and off the flight was brilliant. We stayed in a Finding Nemo suite in the Art of Animation and although it was budget it was a lovely resort, very accessible for me including the pool area. They have accessible rooms with roll in showers which where fantastic.  We used Tiffany Town cars to get around outside the park and again great when it came to dealing with me and the wheelchair.

No matter where I went, shopping, Universal or the Disney parks the staff where all very helpful and it never felt that me or my needs where an inconvenience. I have to admit the first time I thought of going on holiday after the amputation never mind abroad it was terrifying ! Then to go abroad on a 9 hour flight, well lets just say I thought I was insane to do it with 5 kids in tow, but if you are willing to take a leap of faith it is worth it. I experienced more this time and made a point of going on more rides and taking part in more photo opportunity's which is exactly what I did.  To be honest it is a shame that places in the UK don't take a leaf out of Disney, Universal and Thompson book with regards to how they treat disabled people and children with disability's

Tyler was never left out of anything either due to his ASD. When the ques where too much for him and there was issue with sensory overload due to his ASD they give us a card . You went to some one on the ride showed them the card and they would give you a time to return for that ride FREE. Now this might sound familiar and so it should. It is the same principle as the fast pass system used in this country at places such as Alton Towers and Thorpe park, but these you have to pay for on top of your admission ticket. In the UK you are made to feel like an inconvenience in these places or that you are making people go out of their way to accommodate you. This in turn can make you feel like you don't want to take part or get in the way, even when you are like me and have a hide like a rhino.

November and December passed with a few issues concerning my health and Tyler's school.

A small run in with a teacher who was teaching back in the day when children being "too clever for their own good" or the attitude of no such thing as ADHD just naughty children applied. Tyler and him had a few run inns just before Christmas which caused Tyler's ASD to escalate. This accumulated in a suggestion being made that he should go to a inclusion school as he would never pass his STATS due to being uncontrollable , (this was news to us as Tyler has never had any issues like this at school before) and things happening like Tyler walking out of class and getting into arguments with the teacher. (mind you why a grown man is arguing with a ten year old to start with never mind a ten year old with ASD !!). After a very interesting meeting where it was pointed out that said teacher shouting at Tyler all the time was the same as him physically hitting him.,(Tyler's ASD is sensory so loud noises cause him pain), and asking why things that had been agreed to be put in place had not been implemented yet, making sure things that had been implemented where still being carried out I requested for him to see a Educational Psychologist.

After various tests it turns out that Tyler is a gifted boy and there should be no reason why he wont pass is STATS, go to comprehensive in top sets and fly through University ! Said teacher is retiring this year.
So Christmas came and went and so did my kitchen. After a hole appearing in the floor it was deemed too dangerous for me to use the kitchen with the wheelchair. So I started trying to cook meals alternating between the kitchen and taking rests in my wheelchair that I had parked at the entrance to the kitchen. This did not work well. Then the real problems started.

Now am used to my left stump splitting, after checking with the limb center I was told that this was nothing to worry about as it was the way the scar was and it was just rubbing in the liner. But now my right stump has split and there is no reason , nothing to rub and it has split along my scar. After a run around with the NHS and being bounced from a NHS direct call center , to a paramedic, to the GP, to a skin specialist who turned out to be a district nurse and finally to the limb center, I have ended up on antibiotics and a emergency appointment at the Limb center. However this has unfortunately lead to nearly two weeks off from University,

So now you are all caught up.....just about. There is some interesting news on the horizon. A colleague and me are going to be doing some research into therapy pre and post op in the hope to push this through into a regional center to provide support, advice and therapy for people  not just with amputations but with all disability's. I am also looking at expanding the use of this blog into assessing venues, events, hotels, pubs, cinemas, clubs etc for the ease of use, treatment and helpfulness. AS well as this we are looking to set up a website and information leaflet. Watch this space !!

Next blog I will let you know how my daughters 16th went and how the restaurant helped me to make the most of the night with my family. I have two birthdays coming up at different venues in Sunderland as well as Newcastle Film and Comic Con at the Newcastle Arena, which I will be reviewing as well, hope fully am looking to get some input from said venues and events as well.

Hopefully though my experience of taking chances like going back into full time education, starting my own business, going out to work etc I can encourage and help other people to do the same. Showing that just because you have had a amputation, or you are wheelchair bound or in fact have any kind of disability, even if you know some one ,a family member or friend maybe even your child who has a disability  that effects them, there is places you can go, things to do and experiences to enjoy.

Live life to the max. Never give up.
